The Cost of Saving Time

The Cost of Saving Time

We Spend Too Much Time Trying Not to Waste Time

Have you ever noticed how much effort we put into not wasting time?

We look for the fastest route. The shortest line. The quickest checkout. The best itinerary. The most efficient way to do almost everything.

It makes sense. Time is one of the few things we can never get back, so of course we don't want to waste it.

But somewhere along the way, I wonder if trying to save time sometimes causes us to miss the very experience we were trying to have.

I noticed this while traveling.

We'd walk a little faster to squeeze in one more attraction. Finish lunch because the next reservation was coming up. Take the photo, then move on to the next stop.

But when I think back on the trip, I don't remember how efficiently we followed the itinerary.

I remember getting lost.

Watching the sunrise over the water.

The conversation while waiting for a train.

Laughing because we had no idea where we were going.

None of those moments were planned.

That's when I started wondering...

How often do we do this at home?

At work, we rush from one meeting to the next without stopping to appreciate what we just accomplished.

At dinner, we're already thinking about the dishes, tomorrow's schedule, or the email we still need to send.

During conversations, we're preparing our response before the other person has finished speaking.

On weekends, we pack our calendars trying to make the most of our free time, only to wonder where it went.

We keep telling ourselves,

"I'll slow down after..."

  • After this project.
  • After the vacation.
  • After the promotion.
  • After the kids are older.
  • After things settle down.

But life has an interesting way of replacing one "after" with another.

Maybe making the most of our time isn't about doing more.

Maybe it's about experiencing more of what we're already doing.

Because the moments we remember rarely happen because they were efficient.

They happen because we were fully there.

So lately I've been asking myself one question.

Am I trying to save time or am I accidentally skipping the experience?

It's a surprisingly difficult question to answer.

Because sometimes saving five minutes costs us the very thing we were hoping to experience.

Time is precious.

That's exactly why we try so hard not to waste it.

But perhaps the greatest waste isn't spending a few extra minutes.

Perhaps it's moving through life so quickly that we forget to experience the moments we were trying to protect.

Maybe we're so busy trying to save time that we forget to spend it.
